Over the years, I have watched the end of many athletic contests and school years. When it comes to athletics, I am reminded of the classic line from the old TV show Wide World of Sports … “the thrill of victory … and the agony of defeat.” In anything in life, how we finish matters. I recall a high school football team that, no matter the score as the fourth quarter began, would all raise both hands, with four fingers on each hand extended.
It was a reminder to all, individually and collectively, that no matter how hard we played for the first three quarters, we were committed to doing our best and finishing strong in the final minutes. Not to overdo the sports analogy, but the saying “it ain’t over till it’s over” holds true in most of life’s endeavors. With that introduction, here are a few thoughts on where we have been and how we might finish this school year.
Masks and COVID Protocols
The time for saying goodbye to masks and social distancing is coming, but not yet. Fortunately, most of our staff who want to be vaccinated have at least begun the process and will be fully vaccinated in the coming weeks. In the Austin area, as many as 25% of the population age 16 and over have reportedly received at least one dose of the vaccine, and the vaccination rate is rapidly increasing. We have kept our schools operational in person continuously since early September. The safety protocols, our staff’s dedication and the community’s cooperation have allowed us to be one of the few districts in the region to remain open, five days a week, running a regular schedule since early September.
As with past vacations (winter break and Thanksgiving), some traveled during spring break or have had family or friends visit Austin. If you feel you have been exposed to the virus or have any symptoms, please stay home until you are sure coming to school is in the best interest of all.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)
Eanes ISD remains fully committed to DEI efforts that began last summer. Dr. Mark Gooden has been working with staff and community members for the last eight months. His knowledge and expertise are instrumental in our efforts. In the fall, trustees formed a DEI Advisory Committee and in January 2021 at our Strategic Summit, they formally elevated DEI to one of only six strategic priorities for the 2021-22 school year. One of the focal points is to gradually and responsibly begin the adoption of instructional resources in the next year.
How we treat one another matters. The killing of George Floyd in May 2020 sparked a desire throughout the world to examine injustices and discrimination that have existed for far too long. Malicious killings last week in Atlanta are yet another reminder hate has tragic consequences.
When we started on this path, our trustees as part of the charge, stated:
While we will focus on enhancing racial awareness initially, our goal is to improve access and increase belongingness of all students, including those with religious, gender identity, cultural, ability and economic differences. Ultimately, our purpose is to develop a sense of belonging for all members of diverse groups.
Accordingly, let’s keep our focus on treating ALL with respect irrespective of their race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability or economic status. DEI work is difficult, and it takes time to get it right. I recognize some were upset by our communication because they felt it left transgender students and their parents beyond our definition of ALL and therefore without support and unwelcome in our district. We are sorry if our focus was unclear or appeared to be misaligned with the strategic priorities.
Let me be clear: We are committed to providing an inclusive and belonging environment for ALL students. Unequivocally, we care for and welcome ALL students in our schools and we will work to ensure connectivity and compassion so ALL students feel safe and included.
Yes, we will reinforce the procedure of selecting instructional resources permitted by the State of Texas and in accordance with our own Eanes ISD Board Policy. The process of reviewing materials to support our DEI efforts was always set to begin during the upcoming school year. Like most strategic priorities, we will get there but it takes time; no one ever thought this would be a one-year project.
End of Year Celebrations
Spring is here. We were saddened when traditional end-of-year celebrations in the spring of 2020 could not be held in person. This spring will be better. Our staff are planning traditional celebrations, particularly for fifth- and eighth-graders. Of course, Westlake High School staff are working to make graduation an event to meet the wishes of those who desire a customary commencement event in-person, while also accommodating the desires of those who want to participate virtually. More information about these plans will be communicated by campus principals in the coming weeks.
The Fall of 2021
At this time, we are excited and optimistic that COVID-19 will be in our rearview mirror by the fall of 2021. Trials are underway around the country to make available a safe and voluntary vaccine for those under the age of 16. Even before the end of this school year, predictions are that any adult who wants to be vaccinated will have that opportunity. For a few, the lessons learned navigating a virtual/remote education should allow us to better meet the needs of students who are homebound for medical reasons. The vast majority of Eanes ISD students will see a return to the pre-COVID learning environment. We are close, but we still need to finish this year strong.
As we glide into the end of this school year, two images come to mind. The first is of our football team at the end of each game, win or lose, arms locked together, facing parents and fans while singing the school song. The second is our traditional ending to Westlake High School’s commencement ceremony at the Erwin Center, where graduating seniors lock arms and gently sway back and forth, singing that same song.
In both cases, our students come together as a community for a few moments, no matter the good or bad that has happened in the past, the victories or the defeats, to express their commitment to and respect for one another. How we finish matters. How we treat one another matters. Kindness matters.
Let’s follow the example of the students. Let’s finish strong, together.

Padres, tutores y personal,
A lo largo de los años, he visto el final de muchas competencias atléticas y años escolares. Cuando se trata de atletismo, recuerdo la línea clásica del antiguo programa de televisión Wide World of Sports ... "la emoción de la victoria ... y la agonía de la derrota". En cualquier cosa en la vida, importa cómo terminamos. Recuerdo un equipo de fútbol de la escuela secundaria que, sin importar el marcador al comienzo del último cuarto, todos levantaban ambas manos, con cuatro dedos en cada mano extendida.
Fue un recordatorio para todos, individual y colectivamente, que no importa lo duro que jugáramos durante los primeros tres cuartos, estábamos comprometidos a hacer nuestro mejor esfuerzo y terminar fuertes en los minutos finales. No exagerar la analogía con los deportes, pero el dicho "no se acaba hasta que se acaba" es válido en la mayoría de los esfuerzos de la vida. Con esa introducción, aquí hay algunas ideas sobre dónde hemos estado y cómo podríamos terminar este año escolar.
Máscaras y protocolos COVID
Se acerca el momento de decir adiós a las máscaras y al distanciamiento social, pero todavía no. Afortunadamente, la mayoría de nuestro personal que quiere vacunarse al menos ha comenzado el proceso y estará completamente vacunado en las próximas semanas. En el área de Austin, hasta el 25% de la población de 16 años o más ha recibido al menos una dosis de la vacuna, y la tasa de vacunación está aumentando rápidamente. Hemos mantenido nuestras escuelas operativas en persona continuamente desde principios de septiembre. Los protocolos de seguridad, la dedicación de nuestro personal y la cooperación de la comunidad nos han permitido ser uno de los pocos distritos de la región que permanece abierto, cinco días a la semana, con un horario regular desde principios de septiembre.

Diversidad, equidad e inclusión (DEI)
Eanes ISD sigue plenamente comprometido con los esfuerzos de DEI que comenzaron el verano pasado. El Dr. Mark Gooden ha estado trabajando con el personal y los miembros de la comunidad durante los últimos ocho meses. Su conocimiento y experiencia son fundamentales en nuestros esfuerzos. En el otoño, los fideicomisarios formaron un Comité Asesor de DEI y en enero de 2021 en nuestra Cumbre Estratégica, elevaron formalmente a DEI a una de las seis prioridades estratégicas para el año escolar 2021-22. En última instancia, nuestro propósito es desarrollar un sentido de pertenencia para todos los miembros de los diversos grupos. Sigamos el ejemplo de los estudiantes. Terminemos fuertes, juntos.
En consecuencia, mantengamos nuestro enfoque en tratar a TODOS con respeto independientemente de su raza, etnia, identidad de género, orientación sexual, religión, capacidad o situación económica. El trabajo de DEI es difícil y se necesita tiempo para hacerlo bien. Reconozco que algunos se sintieron molestos por nuestra comunicación porque sintieron que dejaba a los estudiantes transgénero y a sus padres más allá de nuestra definición de TODOS y, por lo tanto, sin apoyo y sin ser bienvenidos en nuestro distrito. Lamentamos si nuestro enfoque no estaba claro o parecía estar desalineado con las prioridades estratégicas.
Permítanme ser claro: estamos comprometidos a proporcionar un entorno inclusivo y de pertenencia para TODOS los estudiantes. Sin lugar a dudas, cuidamos y damos la bienvenida a TODOS los estudiantes en nuestras escuelas y trabajaremos para garantizar la conectividad y la compasión para que TODOS los estudiantes se sientan seguros e incluidos.

Celebraciones de fin de año
La primavera está aquí. Nos entristeció que las tradicionales celebraciones de fin de año en la primavera de 2020 no pudieran llevarse a cabo en persona. Esta primavera será mejor. Nuestro personal está planeando celebraciones tradicionales, particularmente para estudiantes de quinto y octavo grado. Por supuesto, el personal de Westlake High School está trabajando para hacer de la graduación un evento que satisfaga los deseos de aquellos que desean un evento de graduación habitual en persona, al mismo tiempo que se adapta a los deseos de aquellos que quieren participar virtualmente. Los directores de las escuelas comunicarán más información sobre estos planes en las próximas semanas.
El otoño de 2021
En este momento, estamos entusiasmados y optimistas de que COVID-19 estará en nuestro espejo retrovisor para el otoño de 2021. Se están realizando pruebas en todo el país para poner a disposición una vacuna segura y voluntaria para los menores de 16 años. Incluso antes de la Al final de este año escolar, las predicciones son que cualquier adulto que quiera vacunarse tendrá esa oportunidad. Para algunos, las lecciones aprendidas al navegar por una educación virtual / remota deberían permitirnos satisfacer mejor las necesidades de los estudiantes que están confinados a sus hogares por razones médicas. La gran mayoría de los estudiantes de Eanes ISD volverán al entorno de aprendizaje anterior a COVID. Estamos cerca, pero todavía tenemos que terminar este año con fuerza.
A medida que nos acercamos al final de este año escolar, nos vienen a la mente dos imágenes. La primera es de nuestro equipo de fútbol al final de cada partido, gane o pierda, con los brazos cruzados, frente a los padres y aficionados mientras cantan la canción de la escuela. El segundo es nuestro final tradicional de la ceremonia de graduación de Westlake High School en el Erwin Center, donde los estudiantes de último año se abrazan y se balancean suavemente hacia adelante y hacia atrás, cantando la misma canción.
En ambos casos, nuestros alumnos se unen como comunidad por unos momentos, sin importar lo bueno o malo que haya pasado en el pasado, las victorias o las derrotas, para expresar su compromiso y respeto mutuo. Cómo terminamos importa. Cómo nos tratamos unos a otros es importante. La amabilidad importa.
Sigamos el ejemplo de los estudiantes. Terminemos fuertes, juntos.
