Valley View Flu and Illness Information

There is a lot of information in the media concerning a heavy and widespread flu season. All Eanes ISD schools are monitoring reports of positive flu tests. At Valley View we have seen a scattering of confirmed, positive cases of flu (strands A & B). I like to think the extra precautions taken daily by our custodians, teachers, bus drivers and Nurse Wilson are contributing to our numbers being significantly lower than other campuses. Our team is really busy disinfecting and reinforcing healthy habits daily.

During the last two weeks, Nurse Wilson reports cases of strep throat, mononucleosis, bronchitis, pneumonia, stomachaches with some vomiting and diarrhea, congestion, sore throat, cough, headache, fatigue and an occasional significant fever or complaint of body aches and the flu across all grade levels. Unlike years past, individuals diagnosed with the flu are NOT always experiencing a fever. Some children have experienced leg pain, vomiting and diarrhea with the flu. When fever is present, it may begin 24 hours after the first symptoms appear and unfortunately people are contagious the day before the first symptoms appear. All of these factors make the discernment between allergies, colds and the flu more complicated for parents and health care providers.  We do not envy Nurse Wilson's job during this time of year and give thanks that she has remained healthy.

We ask that you use an abundance of caution and alert your child's teacher if your child is not feeling well.  If any of your child's teachers observe changes in stamina, attitude and/or work production, paired with a sore throat, headache, watery eyes, muscle aches, congestion, chills, runny nose or cough, even without fever, you will be called to pick up and keep your child at home until the symptoms subside.

Lastly, please demonstrate tremendous patience if/when you receive a call from school to pick your child up. Please be really nice to Nurse Wilson! She does not make the rules and yet, she is required to enforce them. Nurse Wilson will always share the observed symptoms and the impact they are having on your child. In addition, she has firsthand knowledge of confirmed illnesses in your child's classroom and grade level.  Nurse Wilson will also clarify the length of time your child must remain home before returning to school. The directive to pick your child up and to follow the health guidelines before returning to school must be followed in order to protect the health and well-being of all students.

One last thing, our supply of tissues and Clorox disinfecting wipes has been depleted. If you are so inclined, we are accepting donations for these items in all classrooms and the nurse's office.

Sleep, eat, exercise and stay healthy. We miss your children when they are absent.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Dusek
