Cardinal Weekly

December 18

PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING

Parents,

I don't know about you, but December really snuck up on me this year.

We are working hard to keep routines as consistent as possible and trying to stay focused until Friday when we sing like Elsa, let it go, let it go, can't hold it back any more.

On Friday we invite all staff, students and parents to wear their favorite pajamas and join us from 7:45-8:30am for one of our most entertaining assemblies of the year. The Madrigals, Westlake High School's elite performance choir, will dazzle us with their voices and make us laugh with their silly antics. We'll extend the fun as Mr. Z leads us in a light-hearted campus sing-a-long. Lastly, the week would not be complete without a celebration before winter break. Class parties will be held at different times for each grade level during the day. Our children will leave well instructed (but not well rested) and full of cheer when we dismiss at 11:50 on Friday, December 22.

We know you are busy preparing too!  No other month of the year presents as beautifully and abundantly the multicultural diversity of our community than December does. It is wonderful to learn through the eyes of your children the traditions you find meaningful. It is clear that we are all trying to balance school and personal commitments this time of year. Thank you for doing your best to make school a priority (bed times, healthy food and regular routines) this week. We need all the help we can get in keeping children and ourselves focused.

This time of year, some of the greatest stressors are the time, money and energy that go into party planning and gift giving. I would like to thank all the parents who volunteered to shop for 95 staff members. Using the Cardinal Fund donations, the contributions made by 70% of our families, affords us the opportunity to meet the goal for every staff member to receive a winter gift  that is personal ($50 value). This gift from the Cardinal Fund counts as a gift from every parent to every staff member. That means all parents can relax knowing that your child's teachers, custodians, nurse, counselors, office staff, teaching assistants, FIT teacher, special education teacher, specials teachers, etc… ALL received a gift from you. In addition, the booster club used your donations to reduce shopping and expense for all parents by purchasing all paper goods for K-5th parties. Thank you again for donating to the Cardinal Fund. We find peace and great joy in knowing that every staff member is valued and appreciated for the contribution they make to our school.

With all of that said, many of you have asked for clarity about "gift giving" to EISD staff beyond the Cardinal Fund. Board Policy no longer limits gifts to staff members. Parents who choose to go above and beyond the Cardinal Fund are asked to do so voluntarily and individually (not by way of class collections or group efforts since the Cardinal Fund provided group contributions). To be clear, donations to the Cardinal Fund cover a $50.00 gift in December and another $50.00 gift in May for every staff member at VVE. If you have not contributed to the Cardinal Fund and/or did contribute, but desire to show your appreciation to specific staff members making a meaningful difference in your child's life, you are always welcome to do so (any time of year). Below is a link that includes each *Staff Member's Favorites. Parents are welcome to use this list any time of year to show small tokens of gratitude and appreciation to any adult at VVE.

In closing, as the week begins and undoubtedly comes to a close at lightning speed, I would like to personally thank you for the greatest gifts you could ever bestow. It is not your contribution to any fund or any gift you purchase or make that keeps us coming back year after year. It is the gift of trust you demonstrate every day you choose Valley View as your child's school. Your children are the most cherished gifts of all and for those gifts, we thank you.

Lovingly,

Jennifer Dusek

VVE Principal
